Evan Letkeman Wins Silver at Provincial Swimming Championship

Evan Letkeman

Grade 11 student Evan Letkeman stood proudly on the podium at Watermania in Richmond, his first provincial medal dangling from his neck on a red ribbon.

Evan was GNS's sole representative at this year's Provincial Swimming Championship. Training with Pacific Coast Swimming, Evan qualified for Provincials in four races. Determined to come home with a provincial medal, he chose to race in only two finals, the 100 m back and 200 m individual medley (i.m.) in order to keep his body and mind in top form to swim his best.

In the i.m. final, Evan and another swimmer raced side by side, fighting for second place. Evan's sound preparation paid off; he pulled ahead in the last 25 metres and won the silver medal! In the final for the 100 m back, Evan achieved a personal best time and seventh place.

Though Evan was GNS's lone representative at provincials, he managed to single-handedly earn the school 36th place out of 66 participating schools in the boy's category.

What a terrific accomplishment, Evan! As our good friend Dory from Finding Nemo said, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming!"
